Vizhinjam Container Terminal Project is expected to trigger Real Estate boom in and around this coastal town, near Trivandrum, Kerala.

The much awaited Vizhinjam Port project will begin in the next month. World’s one of the biggest port is very close to the world famous Kerala beach Kovalam near Trivandrum.
Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan stated that Cabinet has decided to commence the tender process for the 8,000 crore Vizhinjam Container Terminal project.
Vizhinjam is located in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the head-quarters of Kerala state, South India. Vizhinham, is just 10 NM diversion from international east-west shipping route and is on the west coast of India.
As India is one of the fastest growing economy in the world, and as South India has an impressive growth in terms of business investments and export, Indian in general and South-West coast of India in particular needs more bigger ports to cater to the requirements of a rapidly growing economy. Due to the latest growth-trends and developments in container trade and the huge increase in container traffic in India during the past decade, the trend now is towards agglomeration (increased vessel sizes on order).
The sea near Vizhinjam is 23 to 27 metres deep at the proposed site. This would facilitate berthing of large container ships. No other existing Indian port has this much capacity to allow entry to larger ships. The port is supposed to be 150 metres in width.
Vizhinjam is already located near the Capital city Trivandrum and the world famous Kerala beach Kovalam. It is expected that the decision of Kerala Govt to commence the infrstructure works of Port Terminal area, it will trigger Real Estate boom in and around this coastal town, near Trivandrum.

About 250-275 hectares (600 to 700 acres) would be made available through reclamation of the sea. The port would have two breakwaters of 1.5 km and 6 km with harbour basin and wharfs. Thus Vizhinjam port has very high importance from this point of view. The port handling capacity is envisaged to be 4.1 million TEU/annum at the completion of the Project and would cater to 12000 TEU vessels.
From the above information, it is clear that Vizhinjam International Port is going to be one of the most important ports in India in the coming decades. Already there is fast growth in the IT industry in Trivandrum. As the Govt of Kerala has already announced the beginning of Vizhinham Container Terminal Project’s infrastructure development work, in the coming days, there would be a huge appreciation in the land price and Real estate value in and around, Vizhinjam, Trivandrum and nearby places in Kerala. The nearby Tourist places, including Kovalam, Varkkala etc will also get a big boosting in the coming years.
