The orbiter, upon reentry, emits a sonic boom when it goes subsonic. Does it do the same upon launch when going supersonic?

I was wondering if anyone ever heard a sonic boom that was never explained. If you did do you have any idea on what it might have been? Where I live in Ohio two have occured, but never made it into the newspapers.

What casues a sonic boom and how fast do you need to be going to cause one?
